The Realm of Giants: Elephants & Baobabs

Tarangire National Park is an often-overlooked gem of Tanzania's northern circuit. Its name comes from the Tarangire River, which winds through the park and becomes a magnet for wildlife during the dry season. It is the only water source for miles around, attracting thousands of animals.
But Tarangire is primarily famous for two things: its spectacular landscapes dotted with ancient baobab trees, which give it a prehistoric atmosphere, and its phenomenal concentration of elephants. Observing herds of hundreds of individuals is a powerful and unforgettable experience, unique to this park.

Tarangire is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania. During the dry season, it is not uncommon to witness herds of over 300 individuals gathering along the river.

The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare and fascinating behavior. You will also find a healthy population of leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and occasionally African wild dogs.

With over 550 bird species recorded, Tarangire is a true Eden for ornithologists. You can admire endemic species such as the yellow-collared lovebird or the Ash's starling.

Beyond the elephants, the park is teeming with a great diversity of herbivores: giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, and rarer species such as oryx, lesser kudu, and gerenuk.
This is the ideal time for wildlife viewing. The vegetation thins out, and wildlife concentrates massively along the Tarangire River, the park's only source of water. Expect spectacular scenes with massive elephant herds. The sky is clear, and the temperatures are perfectly pleasant.
The park transforms into a verdant paradise. This is the best season for birdwatching enthusiasts, with intense activity from migratory species. The landscapes become lush, offering striking photographic contrasts. It is a more intimate experience, far from the crowds, punctuated by spring births.
