Why choose Tanzania for your safari?

Tanzania is East Africa's undisputed safari capital. Unlike Kenya, it offers less crowded parks, passionate local guides, and wilder wildlife encounters. Africa Bucket List has been operating private safaris from Arusha since 2019 — here is why Tanzania stands apart.

  • The Serengeti — home to the Great Migration, the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth
  • Ngorongoro Crater — Africa's highest wildlife density inside a 260 km² volcanic caldera
  • Tarangire National Park — massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees
  • Lake Manyara — the only place in the world with tree-climbing lions
  • Zanzibar — combine your safari with pristine beaches on the Indian Ocean

Best time to visit Tanzania for a safari

There is no bad time to go on a Tanzania safari — every season has its magic. Here is how to choose based on your priorities.

Peak season
June — October
Dry season. Wildlife concentrates near water. Great Migration river crossings at the Mara. Best for Big Five and photography.
Short dry season
January — March
Calving season. Lush green landscapes, smaller crowds, lower prices. Cheetahs and wild dogs very active.
Low season
November — December
Short rains. Brief afternoon showers, stunning green scenery, lodges at reduced rates.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost in 2026?

This is the question everyone asks. Here is a realistic price range depending on the type of safari you choose:

Safari type Price per person / day What is included
Budget camping safari $160 — $270 Tents, meals, local guide, private 4x4
Mid-range lodge safari $330 — $550 Comfortable lodge, full board, private guide
Luxury safari $650 — $1,600+ 5-star camps, exclusive experiences, expert guide
Good to know: Tanzania national park fees ($60 to $80 per person per day in the Serengeti) make up a significant portion of the total cost. These fees go directly toward wildlife conservation.

The must-visit national parks

Serengeti National Park

Africa's most iconic park. Its 14,763 km² of open savanna are home to millions of animals. The Great Migration moves through from December to July, culminating in the dramatic Mara River crossings from July to October. Learn more about the Serengeti

Ngorongoro Crater

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 260 km² volcanic caldera hosts lions, elephants, buffalo, black rhino and hippo in a self-contained ecosystem. It is one of the last places in Tanzania where you can see the endangered black rhinoceros in the wild.

Tarangire National Park

Less visited but extraordinary. Tarangire is famous for its enormous elephant herds — sometimes over 300 individuals — and its ancient baobab trees. During the dry season, the Tarangire River is the only water source for miles, drawing every species in the area.

Lake Manyara National Park

Small but spectacular. This park borders an alkaline flamingo lake and is famous for its tree-climbing lions — one of the rarest behaviours in the animal kingdom. A perfect one-day stop between Arusha and Ngorongoro.

Best Tanzania safari itineraries

10 days — Tanzania and Zanzibar

Great Migration — The Mara River crossing

7 to 10 days between July and October to witness the dramatic Mara River crossings. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest leap into crocodile-infested waters. The most intense wildlife spectacle on the planet.

Tanzania vs Kenya safari: which is better?

Both countries share the same ecosystem — the Serengeti on the Tanzanian side, the Masai Mara on the Kenyan side. Here is how they compare:

Tanzania

  • Larger, less crowded parks
  • Strict vehicle limits per sighting
  • More exclusive experience
  • Zanzibar beach extension
  • Kilimanjaro trek option

Kenya

  • Easier access from Nairobi
  • More established tourism
  • Masai Mara river crossings
  • More budget lodge options
  • Coastal extension at Mombasa

For a first-time safari or a luxury experience, Tanzania is our recommendation — the parks are larger, the wildlife more abundant, and the overall experience more exclusive.

Private safari vs group safari: which should you choose?

At Africa Bucket List, we always recommend a private safari. Your vehicle, your guide, your pace. You stay at a sighting as long as you want — no compromise with other tourists.

Group safaris may seem more affordable but mean rigid schedules, crowded vehicles and less flexibility for wildlife observation. For a once-in-a-lifetime journey, the private safari is the only choice.

Practical advice for planning your Tanzania safari

Visa

Most nationalities must apply for an e-Visa online before departure at tanzania.go.tz. Budget $50 for a tourist visa valid for 90 days.

Health and vaccinations

Consult your doctor or a travel clinic before departure. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if you are arriving from an endemic country. Antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended for the duration of your stay.

What to pack

Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, olive green), warm layers for early morning game drives, binoculars, high-SPF sun cream, DEET insect repellent. A small personal first-aid kit is advised.

Currency

The Tanzanian shilling is the local currency but US dollars are accepted everywhere. Avoid worn or pre-2006 bills — they are frequently refused.

Frequently asked questions about Tanzania safaris

How many days do you need for a Tanzania safari?

A minimum of 5 days to see the highlights. Ideally 7 to 10 days to enjoy each park fully without rushing.

Can you do a Tanzania safari with children?

Absolutely. We recommend children aged 6 and above for game drives. Many lodges offer specific activities for families.

Is Tanzania safe for tourists?

Yes, Tanzania is one of the most politically stable countries in East Africa. National parks are secure with armed rangers present at all times.

Can you see the Great Migration year-round?

The migration is a permanent cycle — the wildebeest are always moving. The dramatic Mara River crossings happen from July to October. From January to March, you will witness the calving season in the southern Serengeti.

What is the difference between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara?

They share the same ecosystem. The Serengeti (Tanzania) is significantly larger and has strict rules on vehicle numbers per sighting, making it a more exclusive and authentic experience than the Masai Mara (Kenya).

How much does a Tanzania safari cost all inclusive?

For a private mid-range 7-day safari, budget between $2,700 and $4,500 per person all inclusive (transport, lodges, guide, park fees, meals). Contact us for a free personalised quote.
