Good to Know

Frequently Asked
Questions

Is it possible to go on a safari in Mikumi in a single day from Zanzibar?

Yes, absolutely! Thanks to a domestic flight of about 30 minutes from Zanzibar, it is possible to experience a full safari in Mikumi National Park in a single day. You leave early in the morning from your hotel in Zanzibar and return the same evening, after a day rich in wildlife sightings.

What is the price of a safari in Mikumi departing from Zanzibar?

The price starts at €450 per person for a group of 6 (total €2,800). This price includes round-trip flights, transfers, park entrance fees, bush lunch, and a professional English-speaking guide. For smaller groups: 1 person = €450, 2 people = €900, 3 = €1,350, 4 = €1,800, 5 = €2,250.

What animals can be observed during a safari in Mikumi?

Mikumi National Park is one of the wildlife-richest parks in Tanzania. You will have a high chance of observing lions, elephants, Masai giraffes, plains zebras, hippos, Cape buffaloes, wildebeests, and impalas. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded in the park.

How long is the flight between Zanzibar and Mikumi?

The domestic flight takes about 30 minutes. This is one of the great advantages of this safari: you avoid several hours on the road and maximize time spent observing animals. The flight is operated by local companies on small aircraft like the Cessna Caravan.

Can you see the Big 5 during a safari in Mikumi?

Mikumi is home to 4 of the 5 members of the Big 5: the lion, elephant, leopard, and buffalo. The rhinoceros is absent from the park. For a complete Big 5 safari including the rhinoceros, we also offer excursions to the Ngorongoro Crater.

The best period is the dry season, from June to October. The green season (November–February) is also pleasant, with lower prices. The period to avoid is mid-March to mid-May, during the heavy rains.

What is the difference between Mikumi and the Serengeti from Zanzibar?

Mikumi is 30 minutes from Zanzibar and accessible from €450 for one day. The Serengeti requires 1.5 to 2 hours of flight and a minimum of 3 days for a budget starting at €1,200. The Serengeti is the obvious choice for the Great Migration of wildebeests (July–October).

Is the safari in Mikumi suitable for children and families?

Yes, our private safari is perfectly suited for families with children. The 4x4 vehicle is privatized for your group, which allows adjusting the pace to the children's wishes. We recommend this safari for children aged 5 and up.

Is a visa necessary to go from Zanzibar to Mikumi?

No, no additional visa is required for this domestic flight. Zanzibar and the Tanzanian mainland are part of the same national territory. If you are already in possession of your Tanzanian visa, it covers your travel to Mikumi.

For optimal wildlife viewing, the long dry season from June to October is unrivaled. Vegetation is low and animals concentrate near waterholes, making safaris particularly fruitful.

For lush landscapes and the magic of births, the period from January to March is exceptional, especially in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu). It is the ideal time for photographers and to see intense predator activity.

To avoid crowds and enjoy attractive rates, the rainy seasons (March to May and November-December) transform the landscape into a lush garden. These periods offer a more intimate experience of Tanzania.
