A honeymoon in Africa promises emotions you will share for a lifetime: the first lion spotted at sunrise, a candlelit dinner in the middle of the savannah, then a few days of doing nothing at all on an Indian Ocean beach.

Among all African destinations, Tanzania offers a rare advantage: it combines the continent's finest safari and one of its most beautiful islands, Zanzibar, in a single trip. Here is how to plan an unforgettable honeymoon, with advice from our team based in Moshi.

Honeymoon in Africa: the essentials

For a honeymoon in Africa, Tanzania is our top pick: a private safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, then a beach stay in Zanzibar, a short flight away. Plan 10 to 14 days, travel between June and October or December and February, and book your lodges 6 to 12 months ahead.

6 romantic moments for your honeymoon

  • Dinner under the stars

A table set in the bush, a campfire, and the African sky as your only backdrop.

  • A balloon flight over the Serengeti

Take off at dawn and watch the savannah wake up, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush, with our partner Miracle Experience.

  • A private safari for two

Your guide, your pace, your stops: no strangers in the vehicle, only the two of you.

  • Elephants from your terrace

Some lodges overlook waterholes where herds come to drink, such as Tarangire Elephant Springs.

  • A sunset dhow cruise

Sail on a traditional boat off Zanzibar as the sky turns to fire.

  • An evening in Stone Town

Alleys, spices and dinner on a rooftop in the UNESCO-listed old town. Try the Tanzanian specialities too.

Our tips for a perfect honeymoon

  • Book 6 to 12 months ahead

The most romantic lodges have few rooms and fill up quickly in high season.

  • Mention your honeymoon

Many lodges prepare a special touch for newlyweds.

  • Don't overload the programme

Two or three nights per stop are better than rushing from park to park.

  • Prepare the paperwork early

Apply for your visa on the official e-visa portal, and check the mandatory travel insurance for the mainland or the Zanzibar insurance, depending on where you arrive first.

  • Travel light

Soft bags for internal flights and neutral colours for the safari.

  • Learn a few words

An "asante sana" (thank you very much) always brings a smile.
